Salary Range: $40,000 - $60,000
Food Service Managers are responsible for the supervision of personnel and management of the schools’ individual Nutrition Services programs. This is done through routine visits and monitoring which assure sites adhere to State and District standards of the Federal meal program guidelines. Food Service Managers will supervise and coordinate staff, operations, and activities in an assigned cluster of elementary, middle, or high schools. Develop and promote positive community schools, student, and staff relations and customer satisfaction.
Education and Training
Bachelor’s Degree in Food Science or Nutrition plus one year management experience in school nutrition; or Associate Degree or two year college certificate in related field with an additional three years of experience in Federal school nutrition or childcare meal programs.
Serving nutritious and healthy food is an important goal of school breakfast and lunch programs. The Food Service Manager needs to have a good understanding of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Pyramid for reference during meal planning. They must be friendly and respectful when interacting with students, teachers and other staff. They also need to be able to follow recipes, make accurate measurements and operate food preparation machinery. Since their job may involve lifting heavy cartons and containers, Food Service Managers need to be aware of proper and safe lifting procedures. In many cases, Food Service Managers need to have a valid driver's license.
